Holland Norway Lines first from Cuxhaven, then from Emden to Norway

It is now certain that Holland Norway Lines will be sailing from Cuxhaven in mid-April and from Emden in June to Kristiansand in Norway.

The Dutch ferry company Holland Norway Lines (HNL), which has been offering a direct ferry service between Eemshaven and Kristiansand in Norway since last year, is facing major problems at its home port. These problems forced HNL to look for alternatives. Now a solution has been found. From April 18, Holland Norway Lines will operate on the Cuxhaven-Kristiansand route and from June 1 on the Emden-Kristiansand route. All guests already booked for these crossings will be informed by the shipping company about rebooking and cancellation conditions.

Press release from Holland Norway Lines (HNL)

Holland Norway Lines announces solution for the port situation in Eemshaven from April: Shift of departures to Germany

Holland Norway Lines has found a solution to the recent difficulties in the Eemshaven and announces that the timetable for the spring and summer season is guaranteed. The shipping company will therefore soon be sailing from Cuxhaven and is moving its activities to Emden for the high season.

Emden, 24.03.2023 – In response to the recent challenges related to the fixed berths in Eemshaven, Holland Norway Lines has intensively searched for alternative ports in order to offer regularity and predictability to passengers traveling to Norway and thus be able to guarantee departures again.

“The situation in the Eemshaven forced us to look for alternatives. We are very happy that we have found a solution that we can use from April,” says Morten Aggvin, CEO of Holland Norway Lines. From mid-April, the company will operate from Cuxhaven in Germany. HNL has also signed a letter of intent with AG Ems and the Port of Lower Saxony to sail from Emden from June 1. HNL is currently working with the local authorities to finalize arrangements for ISPS, customs and traffic as well as operational details.

“The majority of our passengers are looking for the most efficient route from Northern Europe to Norway – or vice versa – with direct access to the Norwegian fjord area. Emden is ideally located due to its proximity to the Dutch and German markets. We are very pleased to have found a solution with which we can further develop the province of Groningen as a tourist destination,” says Aggvin.

Northern Germany

“We feel warmly welcomed by all the partners of the Port of Lower Saxony, AG Ems, Cuxport, the City of Cuxhaven and, last but not least, the City of Emden. In less than a year, Holland Norway Lines has become a great success and we are very pleased that we can now fully focus on the further development of the company and the passenger experience,” says Aggvin.

The Lord Mayor of Emden, Tim Kruithoff, explains: “The city of Emden is delighted to be able to offer an innovative shipping company like Holland Norway Lines a new home port. With its good transport connections and wide range of cultural activities, Emden is the ideal port of departure and arrival for the ferry service to Norway.”

“We are also pleased to be able to keep this interesting traffic on the Ems on a permanent basis,” adds Dr. Bernhard Brons, CEO of AG Ems.

Aggvin is pleased that passengers have confidence in the shipping company, which is reflected in the booking figures. “We have seen a huge increase in our booking levels compared to last year, and with a move to Emden and the development of new German market opportunities, we are sure this will continue,” says Aggvin.

Groningen

Holland Norway Lines remains in close contact with the province of Groningen, the municipality of Hogeland and the port authority in order to guarantee sailings from and to Eemshaven from January 2024 and thus continue to serve the established West Netherlands market well. “It was always our goal to race from Eemshaven. We also remain in discussion with these new solutions and are looking for opportunities to sail from Eemshaven in the future. We are a Dutch-Norwegian organisation and operate from our headquarters in Groningen,” Aggvin said.

Traveller

Before Holland Norway Lines sails from Cuxhaven, there is still a possibility of cancelations, HNL is also working on alternatives during this period and will keep passengers and other parties informed of possible changes to the ferry schedule in the coming weeks. Aggvin adds: “Holland Norway Lines has a clear ambition to provide our passengers with a unique travel experience and sincerely apologizes for the inconvenience caused by the recent irregularities. As a token of appreciation for all the patience and understanding of our passengers affected by the cancellations, we would like to offer a voucher for a free mini-cruise as well as a 25% discount on a car booking.”
