Taller or longer vehicles can also be booked, but they are more expensive.
When booking a trailer combination, both the towing vehicle and the trailer must be listed in full. A trailer may not simply be booked as part of the car.
Book a RV site early
There is limited space available on the vehicle decks for tall and long vehicles. This is especially true during peak season, school breaks, and on popular departures. Therefore, book your RV or trailer as early as possible and check the dimensions listed before completing your reservation.
Check-in with a motorhome or trailer
For both ferry companies, you should check in at least 60 minutes before departure. If you’re traveling with a large RV, a travel trailer, a trailer, or a pet, it’s a good idea to allow for extra time. At the port, follow the signs for your shipping line and merge into the lane designated for your vehicle.
If you have reserved a charging spot for your electric car on the Fjord FSTR, additional guidelines apply. During the busy summer season, Fjord Line recommends that you check in with your electric car no later than 90 minutes before departure.
Gas cylinders and other hazardous materials
Special regulations apply to gas cylinders, spare fuel cans, and other items classified as hazardous materials. Fjord Line requires that you notify customer service of any gas cylinders or similar items you are bringing with you well in advance of your trip and obtain written authorization. You must be able to present this authorization at check-in.
Color Line has its own terms and conditions of carriage. Therefore, check before departure to see what quantities and types of gas cylinders are permitted in your motorhome or travel trailer.
Traveling with a Dog in a Motorhome
Depending on the shipping company and the ship, a dog may stay in the RV or be accommodated in a designated area on board. On the “Fjord FSTR,” your dog is also allowed on the aft deck and in the lounge there. Color Line also provides dog crates and a designated outdoor area.
Please let us know when you make your reservation that you plan to travel with a dog. Please note that the vehicle deck is not freely accessible during the crossing and can get very hot there in the summer.
Taking Your Motorcycle on the Ferry
Please be sure to book your vehicle specifically as a motorcycle and indicate if you’ll be bringing a trailer. When driving onto the vehicle deck, you must wear your helmet and follow the crew’s instructions. Please note that the vehicle deck may be slippery due to moisture. After parking your motorcycle, proceed to the passenger area.
Return trip by Ferry from Kristiansand to Hirtshals
The ferry from Kristiansand to Hirtshals is also operated by Color Line and Fjord Line. Since both shipping companies use different terminal areas in Kristiansand, you should check the address on your booking confirmation before you arrive.
Terminal and Access Road in Kristiansand
Color Line uses the terminal at Havnegata 47, while Fjord Line uses the one at Vestre Strandgate 31. Both are centrally located in the Port of Kristiansand.
Coming from Oslo, you can reach Kristiansand via the E18. If you’re coming from Stavanger or western Southern Norway, take the E39 into the city. In the harbor area, follow the signs for your ferry line rather than the general signs for the ferry terminal.

Please be at the correct terminal at least 60 minutes before your scheduled departure. Have your booking number and a valid ID or passport ready. If you are traveling with a motorhome, a trailer combination, a trailer, or a pet, you should allow extra time.

Boarding Procedure

After arrival, remain in the passenger area until the vehicle deck is opened. Then disembark in accordance with the crew’s instructions and the signage at the port.
By car or RV, you can take the E39 directly toward Hjørring and Aalborg. Once you reach the Aalborg area, switch to the E45. This route continues through Aarhus, Kolding, and Flensburg into Germany.
Continuing the journey by RV or on foot
After disembarking, you should get in the lane heading toward the E39 early if you’re driving a motorhome or a motorhome with a trailer. Before embarking on a long drive, check your cargo, the bike rack, and the trailer hitch.
As a pedestrian, you can reach the train station and bus station in Hirtshals on foot. From the Color Line Terminal, it’s about a ten-minute walk to the train station. From Hirtshals, there are regional train connections to Hjørring and Aalborg. Be sure to check your connections before your trip, as they aren’t automatically coordinated with every ferry arrival.

There is a limited number of dog crates available in the SuperSpeed 1’s dog area. If the dog remains in the vehicle or in a dog crate, the visiting hours announced on board apply. Cats and other pets must remain in the vehicle during the crossing. Pets are not permitted in the other public indoor areas.
Color Line currently charges €9 one way for a dog traveling in the vehicle and €15 for a dog crate. Prices are subject to change.
Traveling with a Dog on the Fjord FSTR
On the Fjord FSTR, your dog can either stay in the vehicle or accompany you to the aft deck and the salon there. You are not allowed to take your dog into other interior areas of the ship.
If your dog stays in the car, the vehicle deck is always closed during the crossing. Therefore, you cannot visit your dog on your own. Especially in the summer, the aft deck is the better option, since it can get hot on the vehicle deck.
There are no dog crates or dog-friendly cabins on the Fjord FSTR. The fee for bringing a dog on board is currently €15 per one-way trip.
Traveling with a Dog on the MS Stavangerfjord or MS Bergensfjord
On Fjord Line’s cruise ferries, you can travel with your dog in your vehicle, in a dog crate, or in a dog-friendly cabin. These special cabins can only be booked by phone and are often booked up well in advance.
If your dog remains in the vehicle, you may only access the vehicle deck at designated times and when accompanied by a crew member. A dog area is available on Deck 10 for exercise and fresh air. Your dog is not permitted in the general interior areas.
Fjord Line currently charges €15 per one-way trip for transporting a dog in the vehicle or in a dog crate. For a dog-friendly cabin, the price of the selected cabin category applies in addition.
What documents does my pet need?
Special regulations apply for entry into Norway. Dogs, cats, and ferrets generally require a valid EU pet passport, a microchip, and a valid rabies vaccination. Dogs are also subject to Norwegian regulations regarding treatment for the fox tapeworm.
Check the current entry requirements well in advance of your departure and have a veterinarian document all necessary treatments in your pet’s passport. Also, be sure to bring water, a bowl, food, and enough poop bags for the trip.
