How to reach the Cuxhaven ferry port by car:
- From the east (e.g. Hamburg): Follow the B73 northwest to Cuxhaven. Follow the signs to the ferry port.
- From the south (e.g. Bremerhaven): Take the A27 in the direction of Cuxhaven. In Cuxhaven, change to the B73 and follow the signs to the ferry port.
- From the west(East Frisian Islands): From the direction of the East Frisian Islands, take one of the many country roads heading east to Bremerhaven. Then drive north via the A27 and the B73 to the Ferries port in Cuxhaven.

For the crossing from Cuxhaven to Heligoland on the FRS Helgoline, you should arrive at the pier at least 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time. The Ferry to Helgoland runs daily and the crossing takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. The crossing is only possible in the season from March to November.
On board the Ferry

What activities can I do on a day trip?

For a compact tour of the island, check out the Cliff Trail, the Lange Anna, and the viewpoints in the Oberland. Also, be sure to set aside time for a break, a meal at a restaurant, or some shopping in the Unterland.
If you only have a few hours, you should focus on the main island. If you want to visit the dune as well, you’ll need to take another ferry and should allow enough time before your return trip to Cuxhaven. Departure of the Northern Lights Catamarans
Cassen Eils’ catamarans usually depart from the “Alte Liebe.” Since the catamaran used and the schedule are subject to change, you should check your booking confirmation before your trip.
Getting to Cuxhaven and Parking
You can reach Cuxhaven by car via the A 27 or the B 73. Then follow the signs to the ferry terminal or to the “Alte Liebe.” Be sure to check which pier is listed in your reservation.
You’ll find paid parking spaces both near the ferry terminal and behind the dike in the “Alte Liebe” area. Not every parking spot is right next to the gangway. FRS recommends allowing about 20 minutes to park your vehicle and walk to the pier.
From the Cuxhaven train station, you can walk to the ferry terminal in about 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can take bus line 1006, which serves the ferry terminal and the “Alte Liebe” area. Be sure to check the current public transportation schedules before your trip.

Luggage on the Cuxhaven–Helgoland Ferry
Baggage policies vary by cruise line and ship. If you plan to bring a large suitcase, a handcart, or a mobility aid, be sure to check the details, especially if you’re taking a trip lasting several days.
Luggage on the Halunder Jet
On the Halunder Jet, your carry-on baggage must not exceed 45 × 30 × 17 centimeters in size and must weigh no more than 8 kilograms. For safety reasons, larger luggage must be checked. A multi-day ticket includes one piece of luggage per person weighing up to 20 kilograms.
In Cuxhaven, you can check your luggage at the ticket counter or at the designated drop-off point. For an additional fee, you can have your luggage transported from the ship to your accommodations on the main island. In some cases, this luggage service can be booked along with your FRS ticket.
Luggage on the MS Helgoland
On the MS Helgoland, one piece of carry-on luggage measuring 55 × 40 × 23 centimeters and weighing up to 10 kilograms is allowed free of charge. Additional luggage must be checked at the pier. Strollers and wheelchairs may be brought on board.
For stays lasting several days, a luggage service is available to deliver your luggage to your accommodations or to the dunes. Additional fees apply.
Luggage on the Nordlicht and Nordlicht II
Different baggage allowances apply on the catamarans than on the MS Helgoland. Strollers and wheelchairs are permitted. However, electric mobility scooters for seniors, handcarts, and Croozers are not allowed on these catamarans. In these cases, the MS Helgoland is a better option.

Traveling from Cuxhaven to Heligoland with minimal barriers
Both the “Halunder Jet” and the “MS Helgoland” offer facilities for travelers with limited mobility. However, the options vary depending on the ship.
The Halunder Jet features wider gangways, an elevator between decks, accessible restrooms, and designated wheelchair spaces. If you use a wheelchair or need assistance boarding or disembarking, please indicate this when booking.
The MS Helgoland also has a suitable gangway and an elevator to the passenger decks. The ship docks directly in the harbor, so there is no need to disembark. Electric wheelchairs with license plates must be registered in advance and may be transported separately as cargo. Cassen Eils asks travelers who require assistance to register at least 24 hours before departure.
Wheelchairs and strollers can be brought aboard the Nordlicht catamarans. However, there are restrictions on larger electric mobility scooters and certain other mobility aids.
Traveling to Heligoland with a Dog
In general, dogs are allowed on the Ferries from Cuxhaven to Helgoland. The conditions and fares vary depending on the ferry company.
With FRS Helgoline, you must specify that you are bringing your dog when you make your reservation. An additional fee is charged for the crossing. Dogs must be kept on a leash on the main island. Dogs and other pets are not allowed on the dune at any time of year.
On Cassen Eils ferries, dogs on a leash may travel for the applicable fare. If you wish to bring another pet, you must arrange for its transportation with the shipping company in advance.
Remember to bring water for your dog. Also, before booking, check which areas of the ship you’ve chosen are dog-friendly.
Can I take my bike or car with me to Heligoland?
The routes between Cuxhaven and Heligoland are passenger-only. Cars, motorcycles, RVs, and trailers are not permitted on board. Your vehicle will remain in Cuxhaven during the trip.
You also cannot bring bicycles with you. Cycling is generally not permitted on Heligoland. The island is easy to explore on foot. To get between Unterland and Oberland, you can use the stairs or the elevator.
