Brittany Ferries presents new hybrid ferry SAINT-MALO
Green pioneer on the Saint-Malo-Portsmouth route
Brittany Ferries has added the first hybrid ferry to its fleet. The new SAINT-MALO will run on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and electricity and will operate daily between Saint-Malo and Portsmouth from February 2025. The Ferry is owned by Stena RoRo and chartered by Somabret, a consortium of the Brittany region and its four départements.
Fewer emissions thanks to modern technology
By using LNG instead of conventional heavy fuel oil, the SAINT-MALO significantly reduces local emissions. In addition, Brittany Ferries expects to reduce CO₂ emissions by 20 to 25 percent. Thanks to the hybrid propulsion system and the electrification of the ports, the Ferry can be operated emission-free when entering and leaving Saint-Malo – an important step towards sustainable ferry transport in the region.
Pioneering tests with bio-LNG
Brittany Ferries is already testing the use of bio-LNG in Spain, which is obtained from organic waste and can almost completely avoid CO₂ emissions. As bio-LNG can be used without adapting the engines, it offers an environmentally friendly alternative for the future of maritime transportation.
Final preparations before the start
There are still a few steps to go before the launch on February 12, 2025. These include port tests, the testing of LNG refueling and the installation of technical systems. The staff will undergo extensive training and, as is Brittany Ferries’ tradition, around 400 works of art by contemporary artists will adorn the ship and ensure a special travel experience.
