GNV VIRGO: First LNG Ferry delivered by Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV)
New addition to the GNV Mediterranean Ferries
The Italian shipping company GNV has taken delivery of its first LNG-powered RoPax ship, the GNV VIRGO. The newbuilding was built by the Chinese shipyard Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in Guangzhou and, according to the company, was delivered ahead of schedule.
Major new construction program at GNV
The GNV VIRGO is part of an extensive renewal program: A total of eight new ships are to be put into service by 2030 – the GNV VIRGO follows already established newbuilds such as the GNV POLARIS and the GNV ORION.
GNV VIRGO Key technical data at a glance

- Length: 218 m
- Width: 29.6 m

Environmental and drive technology
The GNV VIRGO is equipped with LNG propulsion technology and achieves a CO₂ reduction of over 50% per transported unit compared to previous models.
The new Ferries also has “cold ironing” connections(shore power in port), SCR systems (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and waste heat recovery. It therefore meets the IMO Tier III and EEDI Phase II standards.
Christening and deployment on the Genoa-Palermo route
The ceremonial christening of the GNV VIRGO is planned for December 11 in Palermo before the ship enters regular service on the Genoa-Palermo ferry route.
Importance for passengers and freight
For you as a passenger or when transporting goods, this means: more modern technology, more comfort and more environmentally friendly travel. With VIRGO, GNV is strengthening its Mediterranean connections – especially between the Italian mainland and Sicily – and at the same time expanding its fleet with a view to the future.
