Traveling with your dog on the Scandlines Ferries is uncomplicated and free of charge. Scandlines only operates the Rostock-Gedser and Puttgarden-Rødby routes. Dogs and other small pets are welcome on both routes.
Scandlines with dog – booking for the dog not required
Dogs or other pets do not have to be booked with Scandlines. There is no additional charge. Pets generally travel free of charge with Scandlines.
Where is your dog allowed on board?
During the crossing, dogs and smaller pets are allowed in all areas without carpeting. For reasons of hygiene, however, animals must be kept at least two meters away from buffets and catering areas.
Out of consideration for other guests:
- Dogs must be kept on a lead or
- are transported in closed cages, baskets or transport boxes
- you must supervise your pet during the entire crossing
Dog in the car on the Scandlines Ferries
You can leave your dog in the car during the journey. However, please note: For safety reasons, it is not possible to visit the vehicle during the journey.
This is a common solution for many travelers, especially on the short routes Puttgarden-Rødby (approx. 45 minutes) and Rostock-Gedser (approx. 2 hours).
Dogs in the car – risk, responsibility & decision support
Before the crossing, you must make a binding decision as to whether your dog will stay in the vehicle or join you on the passenger deck. A later change is not possible, as the car decks are closed during the entire Ferries. In warm temperatures, it is strongly recommended that you take your dog on deck with you.
Take your dog on deck with you
If you take your dog with you on deck, you can borrow a water bowl for your dog from the Scandlines FoodXpress. However, there is no dog toilet on the Scandlines Ferries.

A Labrador sits relaxed in a dog transport box in the trunk of a van on the car deck of the Ferries. This ensures that dogs can travel safely during the crossing.
Is it compulsory to wear a muzzle on Scandlines?
Dogs must be muzzled on all passenger decks on Ferries operated by Scandlines. Without a muzzle, your dog may only stay in the vehicle. The only exceptions are officially marked assistance dogs.
Muzzling is compulsory for all dogs on the passenger decks. A well-fitting muzzle should therefore be practiced before departure. Spontaneous solutions at the terminal are not possible.
EU pet passport and vaccination – you need these documents
An EU pet passport is mandatory for dogs and cats when traveling with Scandlines. This must contain:
- Valid rabies vaccination
- Veterinary certificate in the pet passport
Without these documents, entry into other EU countries, in this case Denmark or Germany, is not permitted.
Danish dog law & liability risks
Denmark has a particularly strict dog law. A valid liability insurance is also mandatory for vacationers. In the event of serious biting incidents, the dog may be put to sleep. In addition, dogs must be kept on a lead in towns and forests and there are seasonal beach regulations.
Prohibited dog breeds in Denmark
Denmark has a very strict dog law. Certain dog breeds and their hybrids are banned from entering and being kept in Denmark. A total of 13 dog breeds are affected, including, for example:
- Pitbull Terrier
- American Staffordshire Terrier
- Dogo Argentino
- Fila Brasileiro
- Kangal
- Other listed dogs and their mongrels
These dogs are generally not allowed to enter Denmark. In serious cases, the dog may be confiscated or even euthanized. Be sure to check with official authorities before traveling if your dog belongs to or looks like a listed breed.
Strict rules also apply during transit: Listed dogs may only be carried in closed transport boxes and are not allowed to leave the vehicle. Plan your route carefully if you are unsure whether your dog could be affected.
Seasickness & stress management for dogs on the Ferries
Not only people, but also dogs can suffer from seasickness and stress on a ferry crossing. Particularly sensitive or anxious animals react to engine noises, vibrations and unfamiliar surroundings.
Typical signs of seasickness in dogs
- heavy panting or salivation
- Restlessness, howling or trembling
- Nausea and vomiting
- Refusal of food and water
How to prepare your dog for the ferry ride
- Ask your vet: Get advice before you travel on whether medication for motion sickness is advisable.
- No large meals shortly before departure: Ideally, feed your dog for the last time 2-12 hours before the crossing.
- Get used to the muzzle and lead: Practice wearing the muzzle in good time so that it does not cause any additional stress on the Ferries.
- Take familiar objects with you: A blanket, basket or toy with a familiar smell will calm many dogs.
Route selection for sensitive dogs
For very anxious or easily stressed dogs, the short Puttgarden-Rødby route with a crossing time of only around 45 minutes can be a good choice. The longer Rostock-Gedser route is more suitable for dogs that already have some ferry experience.
Scandlines Puttgarden-Rødby with dog
The Puttgarden-Rødby connection is particularly suitable for pet owners. The short crossing time, free transportation and easy handling make this route very popular for trips to Denmark and onwards to Scandinavia.
Scandlines Rostock-Gedser with dog
Dogs can also be taken on the Rostock-Gedser route without any problems. Many travelers take their dogs with them on the outside deck or leave them safely in the vehicle. However, it is not permitted to visit the car deck during Ferries.
Conclusion: Scandlines with a dog – simple, free of charge and clearly regulated
Traveling with your dog on the Scandlines Ferries is particularly uncomplicated: no booking necessary, no additional costs and clear rules for the stay on board. With an EU pet passport and a valid rabies vaccination, you can take your dog with you on the Rostock-Gedser and Puttgarden-Rødby routes without any problems.
