• Coming from Brussels (Belgium): Ferries on the E40/A16 in the direction of France. Follow the highway to exit 53 (Loon-Plage). Follow the signs to the Dunkirk ferry port.
• From Paris: Take the A1 and then the A25 towards Lille/Dunkirk. Change to the A16 towards Calais and take exit 53 (Loon-Plage) to the Dunkirk ferry port.

Arrival by car

• From London (northwest): Ferries south east on the M20 until it becomes the A20. Follow the A20 directly to Dover and the signs to the ferry port.
• From Canterbury (north): Take the A2 southeast to Dover. The A2 will take you directly to the ferry port. In the port, follow the signs to your terminal.
• From Brighton (west): Ferry along the A27, change to the A259 and follow the coast road until you meet the A20, which will take you to Dover.

Arrival by bus & train

Train connections to Dover are available from various cities in the UK, including London. Dover Priory train station is the closest to the ferry port. From there, you can take a local bus or cab to the ferry port.

Arrival by plane

• Nearest major airport: London Gatwick (LGW): From Gatwick you can take a train to Dover or drive on the M25 and then on the M20/A20.

On board the Ferry

All amenities are available to you on board the Ferry. The 61-kilometer (approx. 32.9 nautical miles) crossing takes about 2 hours. The ferry runs up to 12 times a day year-round, so you can embark on your journey at any time of year. During the crossing, you can relax, grab a bite to eat, or enjoy the view of the sea.

Arrival in Dover

After about two hours, you will reach the port of Dover in England. Here you disembark and continue your journey in Great Britain.

Dunkirk or Calais: Which route to Dover is right for you?

Both ferry ports are suitable for your trip to England by car. Which route is better depends on your starting point and the day of your trip.

When is “Dunkirk” a better fit?

Dunkirk is located east of Calais. Depending on your route, you may reach this port sooner. To find out, check the distance from your starting point to the respective terminal.

The longer crossing gives you more time for a meal or a break. However, the total travel time to your destination is the deciding factor.

When is it worth traveling via Calais or the Eurotunnel?

The Calais–Dover Ferry takes the least amount of time at sea. LeShuttle has the shortest actual travel time of the three options.

Always factor in travel time, check-in, security checks, and the rest of your journey. Also, compare the best departure times and the total cost of your trip.

Check-in in Dunkirk: Here’s How Your Departure Will Go from Dunkirk

Head to the DFDS terminal in Loon-Plage. Do not drive into the city center of Dunkirk.

Check-in usually closes 60 minutes before departure. Allow extra time for the trip and possible lines. Also, be sure to read the instructions on your ticket.

Have your ticket number and the necessary travel documents ready. Check in advance which documents all your traveling companions need for entry.

At the port, follow the signs to check-in. The staff will verify your travel information and direct you to a specific waiting lane. Follow the on-site instructions during border and vehicle inspections.

As soon as it’s your turn, drive onto the Ferry. The crew will show you where to park.

Bring your medications, valuables, and everything else you’ll need for the crossing. Make a mental note of the vehicle deck and the nearest staircase. Then head to the passenger areas.

Be sure to check the local times for both the outbound and return trips

In England, the clock shows one hour less than in France. The schedules are based on the local time in each location.

Here’s an example: You leave Dunkirk at 12:00 p.m. To arrive in Dover, you need two hours; you arrive at 1:00 p.m. local time.

This does not shorten the crossing. Be sure to take the time difference into account on your return trip as well.

Traveling to Dover by car, RV, or trailer

On the Dunkirk–Dover Ferry, you can travel to England with your own vehicle. When purchasing your ticket, select the appropriate vehicle type.

Measure your vehicle, including all attachments. Keep in mind that a roof box affects the height and a rear bike rack affects the length. Also take into account any bikes and other luggage on the racks.

Check your vehicle information again if you plan to add a carrier or trailer later. Notify your ticket provider of any different dimensions before your trip.

During the crossing, you’ll be using the passenger areas. Therefore, don’t plan on using the RV as a place to sleep while traveling.

Pack a bag for the kids with drinks, snacks, and the necessary clothes. That way, you’ll have everything within reach during the crossing.

Dunkirk to Dover without a car: on foot or by bike?

As a pedestrian, you cannot use this DFDS route. Traveling by bus or train alone is therefore not enough.

With a bicycle, however, you can travel along the route. When purchasing your ticket, select “bicycle” as your vehicle.

DFDS allows one person per bicycle on this route. This rule also applies to e-bikes. For special cases, such as tandems or child trailers, it’s best to check with DFDS directly before purchasing your ticket.

Want to travel to England without a car? Then check out another route that accommodates pedestrians. DFDS, for example, offers this option on the Dieppe–Newhaven route.

Also keep in mind the distances between the train station, the terminal, and your destination.

Traveling by Ferry from Dunkirk to Dover with a Dog

You can take your dog with you on the Ferry to Dover. Register him before the trip and add him to your ticket.

He must remain in the vehicle during the crossing. You are not permitted to enter the regular passenger areas with him. Special rules apply to certified service dogs.

Take your dog for one last walk before checking in. Make sure there’s enough space, fresh air, and water in the car. A familiar blanket can help your dog feel more comfortable.

Can you visit your dog during the crossing?

If you would like to visit your dog, please contact Guest Services. The crew can escort you to your vehicle. Do not go back to the car deck on your own.

What should you check before your trip?

Check with your veterinarian’s office early on to find out what documentation your dog needs to enter the United Kingdom. Also, be sure to review the current U.K. entry requirements.

Have your dog’s documents ready when you check in. Allow plenty of time for the additional checks.

On Board: Food, Wi-Fi, Kids, and the Lounge

During the crossing, you can eat, have a cup of coffee, or enjoy the view. The Ferries have restaurants, cafés, and seating areas.

Food and Beverages

Hot meals and light snacks are available on board. Check in advance to see if your fare already includes meals or drinks. If not, be prepared for additional costs.

Traveling with Children

There’s a play area called “Pirates’ Island” for kids. If you’re there with younger children, please accompany them and keep an eye on them while they play.

Bring a book or a small game along, too. That will help pass the time while you’re waiting before departure.

Wi-Fi and Shopping

DFDS offers free Wi-Fi on this route. In the onboard shop, you can purchase candy, perfume, and other travel items, among other things.

The Premium Lounge offers a separate seating area as well as a selection of snacks and drinks. You can book access to it as an extra.

Compare the additional cost with the features you actually want to use. The general seating areas may be sufficient for a short break.

From Dover to London and Southern England

After the crossing, wait for the announcement for your vehicle deck. Then follow the crew’s instructions to disembark.

From the harbor, traffic drives on the left. Be especially careful to choose the correct lane at intersections and in roundabouts.

Onward journey to London

Depending on your destination, there are several possible routes for the trip to London. Take the A20 to reach the M20. The A2 will take you to the M2.

Before you leave, check the current traffic conditions and your destination. Don’t schedule any tight connections or fixed appointments after the Ferry ride.

Onward journey to Kent and southern England

Dover is a good starting point for a trip through Kent. You can either visit Dover first or continue on toward Canterbury.

On longer trips to southern England, you should plan to take a break. This is especially true if you’ve had a long drive or an overnight ferry crossing.

Return trip from Dover to Dunkirk

Be sure to allow enough time for the return trip before check-in. The departure time in Dover is based on British local time.
