Panarea, the smallest inhabited island in the Aeolian archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea, is a unique jewel north of Sicily. With an area of just 3.4 square kilometers and around 250 inhabitants, it offers charming seclusion. The historic villages of San Pietro, Ditella and Drauto on the east coast blend seamlessly together and tell stories from times long past. Dating back to around 1400 BC, finds at Capo Milazzese bear witness to a rich history, including remains from the Bronze Age. The nearby, uninhabited island of Basiluzzo reveals a Roman villa with impressive wall paintings and a mosaic floor below sea level.
