Stena Line Orders Two New Ferries for the Gothenburg–Frederikshavn Route
Stena Line is renewing its fleet on the route between Gothenburg and Frederikshavn. Two newly ordered hybrid ferries are scheduled to begin service from Sweden to Denmark in 2030. The order was announced on September 23, 2026.
New Stena Line Ferries for the Gothenburg–Frederikshavn Route
The ships are part of the new E-Flexer 2.0 generation. Stena RoRo ordered them on behalf of Stena Line from the China Merchants Industry shipyard in Weihai. There are also options for two additional ships. These are not yet firm orders.
The new ships are designed for daytime crossings and will carry passengers, cars, and cargo. They will have three vehicle decks: one for cars and two for cargo. The Stena Danica and the Stena Jutlandica currently operate on this route.

The Stena Jutlandica reaches the archipelago off Gothenburg just before entering the harbor.
Hybrid powertrain designed for electric operation
The powertrain concept combines fuel-based propulsion and electric power. Space has been set aside for batteries with a total capacity of up to 85 megawatt-hours to accommodate future upgrades. It is therefore not yet clear how much of this capacity will actually be installed at the time of delivery.
Fully electric operation is expected to be possible in the future. To make this possible, the necessary charging infrastructure must be available in the ports, among other things. The engines should also be capable of running on biodiesel and be prepared for future operation with methanol.
What Your Booking Means for Your Trip
The refurbishment is scheduled for 2030. An exact date for the first passenger voyage and the start of bookings for the new vessels have not yet been announced.
