First emission-free Scandlines Ferry FUTURA nearing completion

Construction of the FUTURA in the final phase

The construction of the new emission-free Ferry FUTURA from Scandlines is nearing completion. The Ferry built at the Turkish Cemre shipyard recently spent two weeks in the floating dock, where extensive work such as cleaning and painting the ship’s bottom and installing the bow thrusters was carried out. These thrusters are part of the innovative propulsion system that drives the FUTURA particularly efficiently.

Final tests before the launch

After docking, the Ferry was launched again and is now at the outfitting quay, where final system tests are being carried out. The sea trial is due to take place shortly, during which all systems will be put through their paces together with the Danish Maritime Authority and Lloyd’s Register.

Innovative drive for sustainable shipping

A highlight of FUTURA is the powerful battery system. This can be recharged in the ports of Puttgarden and Rødby in just 12 minutes and enables emission-free journeys across the Fehmarnbelt. The FUTURA is set to transport up to 66 freight units and 140 passengers in regular operations from 2025 and is a central building block for Scandlines’s goal of ensuring emission-free ferry transport by 2030.

Official christening and deployment from 2025

After the Sea Trials, the FUTURA will call at its home port of Rødbyhavn, where it will be prepared for operation on the Puttgarden-Rödby ferry route. The ship is due to be christened at a ceremony in 2024. Scandlines is investing 80 million euros in this pioneering project, sending a strong signal for sustainable maritime transport.

Scandlines Ferry book

The Scandlines-Ferry Futura is initially only intended for the transportation of freight units. But you can also travel between Puttgarden and Rödby on the other Scandlines ferries.
