- Coming from Hamburg (south): Ferry north on the A1 to exit 20-Bad-Schwartau. Then follow the B226 to Lübeck-Siems. There the B226 merges into the B75. Just ferry on along the B75 in the direction of Travemünde. The ferry port is well signposted.
- From the direction of Schwerin, Rostock (east): Ferries on the A20 in the direction of Lübeck until exit 2b Lübeck-Süd. There you change to the B207 towards Lübeck. At the Berliner Platz traffic circle, turn left from the B75 towards Travemünde. Follow the B75 for a few kilometers. The ferry port Travemünde is then closed.
- From direction Kiel (North): Ferry south on the B76 towards Lübeck and change to the A1 towards Lübeck as far as exit 19-Sereetz. Then follow the B226 to Lübeck-Siems. There the B226 merges into the B75. Just ferry on along the B75 in the direction of Travemünde. The ferry port is well signposted.

The direct route saves you the long drive through Denmark and Sweden, as well as an additional Ferry crossing to Finland. You can travel by car, RV, trailer, motorcycle, or bicycle. It’s also possible to travel without a vehicle.
The overnight departure from Travemünde usually takes place in the early morning hours. Check-in and boarding begin the evening before. This allows you to settle into your cabin before the Ferry sets sail. In Helsinki, the ship arrives at the port of Vuosaari, located on the eastern side of the city.

Which cabin can I book?
There are nine different cabin categories to choose from on this route. Options range from compact interior cabins measuring about 10 square meters to spacious suites measuring up to 38 square meters. All exterior cabins have a window with a view of the sea. All standard cabins have their own shower and toilet. Bed linens and towels are provided.
For solo travelers, there are berths in shared outside cabins. These are assigned by gender and can be booked from ages 13 and older. During the summer season, Finnlines also offers reclining chairs. These are also intended only for adults and teens aged 13 and older. If you’re traveling in a recliner, you should bring a blanket or sleeping bag, as well as your own towel.
If you’re traveling with children, a pet, or have limited mobility, you should start looking for a suitable cabin early. There are only a limited number of these cabins available.
What’s available on board?
During the long crossing, you can relax in the buffet restaurant, the Star Café, or the bar. There’s also an onboard shop, areas for children and teens, and outdoor decks. The sauna, hot tub, and fitness center are free to use on the Travemünde–Helsinki route. Wi-Fi is available for a fee and must be booked as a separate package.

Traveling to Helsinki by Car, RV, or Trailer
You can bring your car, RV, or trailer on the Ferry from Travemünde to Helsinki. When booking, you must provide the actual dimensions of your vehicle. This includes roof boxes, bike racks, drawbars, rear racks, and other attachments.
If the dimensions you booked do not match those of the vehicle, you may be charged an additional fee at the port. Whether you can bring your vehicle on board also depends on whether there is still enough space available on the appropriate vehicle deck.
Check-in with a tall vehicle
Vehicles taller than 2.10 meters are parked on a different deck and are generally loaded later. Separate check-in rules apply in Travemünde for buses and particularly tall RVs over 3.80 meters in height. These vehicles must be checked in at the harbor office. During the crossing
After you’ve parked your vehicle on the car deck, you must apply the parking brake and take all necessary items with you. The car deck remains closed and unheated throughout the entire crossing. Therefore, you will not be able to access your luggage, food, or medication during the trip.
Gas cylinders in RVs and travel trailers must remain closed during the crossing. There is a limited number of electrical outlets available for refrigerators. You must reserve an outlet before your trip, and there is a fee. You’ll need a compatible 230-volt adapter to use it.
With the electric car to the Ferry
Electric cars and hybrid vehicles can be transported on Finnlines Ferries. However, charging vehicles on the vehicle deck during the crossing is not permitted. A 22-kilowatt charging station is available at the check-in gate in the Port of Helsinki-Vuosaari. Since the availability of this charging station cannot be guaranteed, you should plan to use additional charging stations along your route.
From Travemünde to Helsinki Without a Car
You can also take the Ferry to Helsinki as a pedestrian or with a bicycle. Since check-in takes place in a sprawling port area, the process is different from traveling by car.
Check in as a foot passenger in Travemünde
Passengers traveling on foot check in at the Hafenhaus on Skandinavienkai and are then taken to the ship by minibus. For night departures to Helsinki, you should check in by 11:00 p.m. at the latest. The bus transfer to the ship is only available until midnight.
Public transportation options to the Hafenhaus are particularly limited late in the evening. Therefore, plan your trip well in advance and allow plenty of time for any transfers. If you want to take a taxi at night, you should book it in advance if possible.
Arriving in Helsinki Without a Car
In Helsinki, the transfer from the ship to the Hansa Terminal is also by shuttle. The Vuosaari Harbor is located outside the city center. From the stop at the terminal, you can take the bus to the Vuosaari metro station and continue on to the city center by metro. Check the current schedule with the HSL public transit authority before your trip.
Cycling to Finland
If you’re traveling by bike, check in at the vehicle counters. Some port areas do not have separate bike lanes. Therefore, follow the instructions of the port staff and ride with extra caution.
In Travemünde, you must wear a high-visibility vest in the harbor area. Be sure to bring your own high-visibility vest. Charging batteries for e-bikes or pedelecs is not permitted in the cabins.
How much luggage can I bring as a foot passenger?
Finnlines does not specify a fixed weight limit for foot passengers. However, you may only bring as much luggage as you can carry on your own in a single trip to the shuttle and on board. Large amounts of luggage or several heavy suitcases can therefore be problematic.
Traveling to Helsinki with a Dog or Other Pet
Dogs and other pets can travel on the regular crossings from Travemünde to Helsinki. You must list each pet when booking and reserve a pet cabin. A maximum of two pets are allowed in one cabin.
Since the number of pet-friendly cabins is limited, you should book early, especially for trips during the peak travel season. There are various pet-friendly cabins to choose from on this route, as well as a larger junior pet suite.
Your pet may not remain in the vehicle during the crossing. Dogs must be kept on a leash outside the cabin, and the posted access rules apply.

On ships operating the Travemünde–Helsinki route, pets are allowed in the designated areas on Deck 7 and on the outdoor terraces on Decks 11 and 12. The dog restrooms are located on Deck 7. An elevator marked with a paw print symbol leads to the upper outdoor areas.
Pets are not allowed in restaurants, bars, saunas, or other indoor areas not expressly permitted. In the summer, be aware that the floors of the outdoor decks can get very hot.

The vehicle deck remains closed after departure. Therefore, pack everything you’ll need during the approximately 30-hour trip into a separate carry-on bag. A small suitcase or duffel bag is more practical than several individual pieces of luggage.

Itinerary for the Short Mini-Cruise
You’ll board the ship in Travemünde in the evening and settle into your cabin. After a day at sea, the ship will arrive in Helsinki the next morning. There, you’ll have about three hours to go ashore. Afterward, you’ll check in for the return trip and arrive in Travemünde the following evening.
Please note that Vuosaari Harbor is located outside the city center. The trip by shuttle, bus, and metro will take up part of your time there. Therefore, be sure to allow plenty of time for the return trip to the terminal.

You can reserve a baby bed through Finnlines Customer Service before your trip. Children under six years of age may travel in their accompanying adult’s cabin without their own bed.
What identification documents do I need for the Ferry to Finland?
As a citizen of an EU country or Switzerland, you need a valid passport or an official ID card that is recognized as a travel document. Children must also carry their own valid identification document. A driver’s license is not sufficient as a travel document for this route. There is no set weight limit for passengers traveling on foot. However, you may only bring as much luggage as you can carry to the shuttle and on board without assistance and in a single trip. Therefore, multiple heavy suitcases can be problematic during boarding and disembarking.

Yes. Lockers are available on the Finnlady, Finnmaid, and Finnstar. Their locations vary depending on the ship and deck. You’ll need a two-euro coin as a deposit to lock them.

There are a limited number of power outlets on the vehicle deck for refrigerators in RVs and trailers. You should reserve a spot before your trip and bring a suitable 230-volt adapter. All other electrical appliances must remain turned off. Gas cylinders must be closed during the crossing.
What vehicle dimensions do I need to provide when booking?
You must provide the full length and height of your vehicle, including all attachments. These include, for example, roof boxes, bike racks, and bicycles attached to the rear of the vehicle. If the dimensions you provided are too small, you may be charged an additional fee at the port. A space on another vehicle deck cannot always be guaranteed.

There, too, a shuttle will take you to the ship.

Yes. Finland is one hour ahead of Germany. The departure and arrival times listed in the schedule are local times. On board, Finnish time applies on the Travemünde–Helsinki route.
How do I get from the Vuosaari Ferry Terminal to downtown Helsinki?
After disembarking, a shuttle will take you to the Hansa Terminal. From there, you can take the bus to the Vuosaari metro station. The metro connects Vuosaari directly to downtown and the main train station. Before your trip, check the current schedules and ticket conditions with the HSL public transportation authority.
