The island’s capital, Newport, looks back on a long history. Already in the year 75 the Romans settled here, the building history of the cathedral goes back to the 9th century. The town’s attractions also include the 17th-century Tredegar House and the Transporter Bridge suspension ferry. Fascinating!

A visit to Osborne House provides insight into the life of Queen Victoria. She created a private retreat for herself here, which still inspires today with its almost original state of preservation, gardens and parks. Also worth seeing are the baroque Appuldurcombe House and Nunwell House with its beautiful gardens.

If you walk through the gatehouse of Carisbrook Castle, you can imagine how mighty the castle must once have been. The castle dates back to the 11th century and today houses a museum. Very popular with visitors are the donkeys, which pull water from a depth of around 50 metres with the help of a rotating wheel.

On the Isle of Wight nature has created impressive landscapes. They can be experienced intensively on the 21-kilometer Tennyson Walk along the cliffs. Special highlights include the limestone rock needles The Needles, chalk cliffs and a picturesquely located lighthouse.

Other beautiful places on the island include the historic St. Catherine’s lighthouse and Alum Bay with its colorful sandstone cliffs. The chairlift takes you down to the beach here. The Shanklin Chine is a 400 metre long and deeply incised gorge with lush flora and fauna.
