Travel guide Åland
Holiday in Åland
In the middle of the Baltic Sea lies Åland. A total of 20,000 islands and skerries are waiting to be discovered by nature lovers. They are connected to each other via bridges and ferries. Here in Åland, life is characterized by the archipelago. Whether on foot, by bike or by kayak: each sport allows physical activity in front of unique – often completely deserted – natural scenery. By the way: Swedish is spoken on Åland!
TOP excursion destinations in Åland
The capital of Åland is the pretty harbour town of Mariehamn. Beautiful to look at are the small wooden houses, villas, restaurants and cafés. A leisurely stroll leads to the two harbors with large cruise ships and the Maritime Museum, where the four-master “Pommern” is waiting to be visited.
The island Kobba Klintar is a very popular photo motif. Because the small pilot house on the island is uniquely beautiful.
The Ferry takes you from Mariehamn to the island, and in summer the deafening sound of the foghorn can be heard at 1.00 pm. The former pilot house from 1862 now houses a café. A perfect place to gaze into the distance over a cup of coffee….
Bomarsund is the largest fortress in Åland. It’s hard to believe that it was built after a war between Russia and Sweden. The year 1809 brought peace, but forced Sweden to abandon Åland. At times, more than 2,000 members of the Russian military lived here. Finland’s independence ended the Russian presence on the islands in 1917. Today only ruins bear witness to this part of history.
For centuries, one of the most important shipping routes from east to west ran across Åland. Reason enough to build a castle here. With Kastelholm Castle, the Swedish kings once created a residence worthy of their status with a curtain wall, residential building and tower. From May to September you can visit the castle, the Vita Björn prison museum and the Jan Karlsgården open-air museum.
