New Ferry “Costanza I di Sicilia” Begins Service to the Pelagic Islands

The new regional ferry “Costanza I di Sicilia” has begun service between Porto Empedocle, Linosa, and Lampedusa. To follow its ceremonial inauguration on August 6, the ship made its first commercial crossing to the Pelagic Islands on August 9, 2026.

This marks the beginning of a new chapter in ferry service off the coast of Sicily. The “Costanza I di Sicilia” is the first Ferry wholly owned by the Region of Sicily. It was built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Palermo. Daily operations have been entrusted to Caronte & Tourist Isole Minori, which operates the ferry service under the Siremar brand.

New Ferry on Existing Routes

This service is not an entirely new ferry route. The modern vessel will provide service as part of the existing island ferry service between the Sicilian mainland and the Pelagic Islands.

The routes served include the Porto Empedocle–Linosa Ferry and the Porto Empedocle–Lampedusa Ferry. The scheduled route goes from Porto Empedocle first to Linosa and then on to Lampedusa.

The entire route across both islands takes about ten hours. Actual travel and arrival times may vary depending on the schedule, weather conditions, and the specific day of travel.

Capacity for 1,000 passengers and 200 cars

The “Costanza I di Sicilia” is approximately 140 meters long and has a gross tonnage of about 14,500. It can carry up to 1,000 passengers and 200 cars. Its maximum speed is 19 knots.

There are 137 cabins available for longer crossings. Some of them are specially equipped for travelers with limited mobility. Thanks to its vehicle decks, the Ferry is also suitable for passengers who wish to travel to Linosa or Lampedusa in their own cars.

Dual-fuel propulsion system, batteries, and solar power system

The new regional ferry is equipped with a dual-fuel propulsion system that can run on diesel or liquefied natural gas. It also features a photovoltaic system and a battery system.

The stored energy enables locally emission-free operation for up to about four hours during a port call. This is intended to reduce exhaust emissions and noise in the ports of Porto Empedocle, Linosa, and Lampedusa.

What does this mean for travelers?

With the “Costanza I di Sicilia,” the Pelagie Islands now have a larger and more modern ship equipped with cabins and ample vehicle capacity. This benefits both locals and vacationers who travel to Linosa or Lampedusa with their own vehicles.

The ship is intended for daily service. Since schedules, stops, and departure times may vary by season, you should check the specific route and availability for your travel date before your trip.
