
Never again travel with the Royal Line: Sassnitz-Trelleborg ferry line to be discontinued

The Ferry Sassnitz – Trelleborg is to close permanently. This has been decided by the Swedish shipping company Stena Line. There have been too few passengers on the King Line for quite some time. Nevertheless, the closure was not an easy decision for the company.

Due to the Corona crisis, the oldest ferry connection in Europe is currently closed. But even after the crisis, operations will not continue. Too few people travel from Rügen to Sweden overall. This has resulted in a poor economic situation on the route. The Königslinie is not only the oldest ferry connection in Europe, but also the fastest ferry connection from Germany to Sweden.
From Rügen to southern Sweden in four hours
The Ferry takes four hours from Sassnitz Mukran to southern Sweden. The first Ferry sailed from this route 111 years ago. But in recent years, only just under 300,000 passengers a year booked a trip. Too little to cover the costs. The ferry Sassnitz is to be transferred to Sweden. Stena Line plans to continue operating the route from Rostock to Trelleborg.
120 employees are affected
on-board staff, staff in the on-board store and employees at the check-in: A total of 120 employees are affected by the closure of the route. Due to the Corona pandemic, they are already on short time. Works council and unions will soon meet to exchange interests.
From Rügen to Sweden: Further possibilities
If you still want to travel from Rügen to Sweden, you can use other ferry connections and other alternatives. Alternative ferry connections include the Stena Line route Rostock-Trelleborg or Travemünde-Malmö with the shipping company Finnlines. But also the Scandlines Ferry Rostock-Gedser is also an alternative. Although there is no direct train connection, there is a train from Bergen auf Rügen to Stockholm Centralstation via Hamburg and Malmö.
With transfers, the trip takes about 15 hours.
A trip to Sweden is also possible by car and without Ferry. Take the A7 to Flensburg and then continue over the Storebelt Bridge and Öresund Bridge to Malmö.
New catamaran fast ferry
Following the closure of the Royal Line after 111 years, the state government of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is now in negotiations with the Ferries shipping company, which operates several island ferries in Germany as well as ferries in the Canary Islands and other regions around the world, about a fast ferry that would travel from Germany to Sweden in a maximum of 2 hours and 30 minutes.
FRS takes over new royal line from September 2020
The Flensburg-based shipping company will operate the new Royal Line from Sassnitz to Ystad from September 2020. The catamaran ferry will be used on the Sassnitz – Ystad ferry route. In the low season, the fast ferry will shuttle between Germany and Sweden once a day. In the high season then 2 times a day.
