Hibernia Line plans new ferry connection between Ireland and France

New ferry service from Cork to Boulogne-sur-Mer

The new ferry company Hibernia Line is planning a direct connection between Cork in Ireland and Boulogne-sur-Mer in France. The project is currently still in the planning phase, but could represent an important new option for travelers and freight traffic between Ireland and mainland Europe.

First insights into the concept

The shipping company’s website already features concept drawings of a future ferry as well as an edited image of a GNV- Ferry named St. Patrick in Hibernia Line ‘s colors. However, when asked, GNV confirmed that there are currently no plans to charter its ships to Hibernia Line.

Operation with charter ships planned

Two chartered ferries ships will initially be deployed to launch the new service. These will enable six evening departures per port per week. In the long term, Hibernia Line plans to add modern and sustainable newbuilds to the fleet.

Launch of the route not realistic until 2026

Officially, the new route is scheduled to go into operation as early as 2025. However, according to industry reports, an opening from 2026 is more realistic. The shipping company is strategically positioning itself to better connect Ireland to mainland Europe and enter the highly competitive market between Great Britain, Ireland and France.

Experienced management with a strong background

Aidan Coffey, who was already involved in the launch of the DFDS service between Rosslare and Dunkirk in 2021, is behind the project. With this expertise, the new shipping company could be an interesting addition to the ferry market, which has so far been dominated by Brittany Ferries, P&O Ferries, Irish FerriesDFDS and Stena Line is dominated. If the project is successfully implemented, Hibernia Line could represent an interesting alternative for passengers and freight customers.
