GNV expands fleet with new ferries

New ferries for the Balearic Islands

At the end of this year, the GNV POLARIS, the first of four new ships built in China, will join the Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV) fleet.
The GNV POLARIS will be deployed on routes between Barcelona and Valencia and the Balearic Islands of Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza.
This expansion comes at just the right time, as GNV needs to strengthen its fleet following the loss of the LA SUPREMA, which was damaged in a fire.

Increased passenger capacity

In order to meet the increased demand, GNV has decided to increase the passenger capacity of the three ships currently under construction.
The number of cabins will be increased from 250 to 450, while the cargo capacity will remain unchanged at 3000 lane meters.
This adjustment will increase the cost of the four newbuildings from the original 500 million euros to 600 million euros, which will be borne by the parent company MSC Group.

Construction progress

The second of the new ferries, the GNV ORION, has already been launched and will be handed over to GNV in summer 2025.
This ship will also have the new capacities and offer space for 1,785 passengers.
The keel laying ceremony also marked the construction of the GNV VIRGO, the third newbuilding.
This and the as yet unnamed fourth newbuilding are scheduled for completion in 2026 and will be equipped with an environmentally friendly LNG propulsion system.
