FRS Baltic discontinues ferry service between Sassnitz and Trelleborg
End of the connection between Rügen and Sweden
The shipping company FRS Baltic has announced that it will discontinue the ferry connection between Sassnitz (Mukran) and Trelleborg in Sweden. The decision affects the so-called “Royal Line”, which has been in operation since 1909. Despite a restart in 2020 and the use of the fast ferry Skane Jet, the route was no longer economically viable. The last crossing will take place on September 30, 2024. The season was already ended prematurely last year. At that time, however, due to a defect on the fast ferry.
Why was the connection discontinued?
The main reasons for the closure are falling demand and the challenges in the freight business. FRS Baltic was no longer able to achieve the required capacity utilization of Ferry, which meant that operations were no longer economically viable. Cost increases in almost all operating items, which had a particularly negative impact on fuel costs, as well as considerable additional costs, such as the CO2 levies introduced from 2024 and the fairway dues in the port of Sassnitz, are further reasons for the economic end.
