DFDS plans new ferry connection from Kiel to Trelleborg
Test run started in Trelleborg
The Danish shipping company DFDS is planning to integrate the southern Swedish port of Trelleborg into its existing route Kiel- Klaipeda. On Friday, Ferry Victoria Seaways will carry out a first test call at the port of Trelleborg. The purpose of these tests is to adjust the ramps and optimize the processes on site.
New opportunities for travelers and freight
With the planned Ferry between Kiel and Trelleborg, DFDS wants to improve the connections between Germany and Sweden.
“This new route will create more travel and transportation opportunities and strengthen logistics solutions in the region,” explains Aleksej Slipenciuk, Route Director at DFDS.
Negotiations not yet concluded
It is not yet clear when the connection will officially start. DFDS is currently in contract negotiations with the port company in Trelleborg regarding the use of the berths. As soon as these have been concluded, the timetable will be published.
Economic importance of the route
Sweden is an important trading partner for Germany. In 2022, Sweden exported goods worth 19.2 billion euros to Germany, while Germany delivered goods worth 30 billion euros to Sweden. The new route could further strengthen economic ties.
Competition for existing providers
With the integration of Trelleborg, DFDS is creating an alternative to existing providers such as TT-Linewhich traditionally serves the routes Travemünde-Trelleborg and Rostock-Trelleborg. TT-Line established a similar connection from Trelleborg to Klaipeda in 2018.
