Balearia will operate electric high-speed ferries between Tarifa and Tanger Ville from 2027

First zero-emission ferry connection between Spain and Morocco

Baleària will operate the first environmentally friendly ferry corridor between Spain and Morocco from 2027 on the Tarifa – Tanger Ville ferry route. Two fully electric high-speed ferries will be used, which are being built at the Astilleros Armon shipyard in Gijón.

Technical data of the new Balearia Ferries

  • Length: 87 meters
  • Maximum speed: 26 knots
  • Capacity: 800 passengers and 225 vehicles
  • Battery charging: Fully rechargeable during a one-hour port call
  • Additional safety: four diesel generators with 11,200 kW for emergencies

Innovative charging technology with robotic arms

The new ships will be equipped with state-of-the-art charging infrastructure. Autonomous robotic arms will be installed in both ports to charge the batteries of the ferries via the Onshore Power System. This technology enables an efficient and fast energy supply without emissions.

Optimized design for the route

The new ships are based on the LNG fast ferries ELEANOR ROOSEVELT and MARGARITA SALAS, which are also operated by Baleària. However, they have been specially adapted to the conditions in the ports of Tarifa and Tanger Ville to ensure even better maneuverability.

With the new emission-free fast ferries, Baleària is sending a strong signal for sustainable ferry transport and environmentally friendly mobility between Europe and North Africa.
