In 1948 the Rederi Ab Vasa-Umeå was founded, the same year the first ship sailed across the Gulf of Bothnia from Vaasa in Finland to Umeå in Sweden. Several owners, mergers and name changes later, the Finnish Wasaline now operates the popular route. Its headquarters are located in Vaasa.
