The capital Istanbul inspires with its unique location. This is where tradition meets modernity and the Orient meets the Occident.
The city looks back on thousands of years of history and offers its visitors a beautiful old town and a magnificent palace. The famous Hagia Sophia, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque and the Grand Bazaar should also not be missed during a stroll through the city.
Once the rulers of the Ottoman Empire resided in the Topkapi Palace. Four courtyards divide the huge complex, where hundreds of rooms, pavilions, mosques, kitchens and baths can be visited.
In Bodrum, guests can look forward to the “Bodrum Kalesi” as well as great beaches.
The medieval St. Peter’s Fort impresses with its thick walls, up to 50-metre-high defence towers and an underwater museum.
Ephesus was once an important port city of the Roman Empire. Today, imposing ruins dominate the picture. Among them the theatre, the Celsus library and the famous temple of Artemis. What a historic place, the temple is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World!
In ancient Aspendos, culture lovers can enjoy a very well-preserved Roman theater. Pavarotti and Carreras have already sung here. The stage house has been preserved at full height, as have the 39 rows of seats for the audience.
Translated into German, Pamukkale means “cotton wool castle”. Mineral water created here unique limestone terraces in brilliant white. The Romans already knew about the healing effects of the water, today visitors bathe in artificial pools and enjoy a play of colors in blue, turquoise and white.
You enter another world with a visit to Cappadocia. Volcanic eruptions, wind and weather created unique rock formations here, the so-called fairy chimneys. Here, people carved cave dwellings and churches into the tufa rock, some up to ten storeys deep and decorated with frescoes. To be admired in the underground city of Derinkuyu and in Göreme.
Entry requirements
German citizens need an identity card or a (children’s) passport to enter Turkey. Make sure that at least one page of your passport is still blank. You don’t need a visa.
Alternative travel options
If you make your way to Turkey by car, long-distance coach or train, you can expect long travel times – after all, the distance from Cologne to Istanbul is around 2,400 kilometers. It is quicker and more comfortable to travel by plane to the international airports in Istanbul, Ankara and Antalya.
