Arrival by car
If you are already on the Orkney Islands, you can easily reach the Stromness ferry port by car. The main road in Orkney is the A965, which connects Kirkwall to Stromness. Take the A965 towards Stromness and follow the signs to the ferry terminal. The ferry port is located at the end of Ferry Road in Stromness.
Arrival by bus & train
The Orkney Islands have no rail connection. However, there are regular bus services between the main towns, including Kirkwall and Stromness. The X1 line connects Kirkwall directly with Stromness. The bus station in Stromness is only a few minutes’ walk from the ferry terminal.
Arrival by plane
Kirkwall Airport is the central airport of the Orkney Islands. From there you can take a cab or bus to Stromness. The ferry port of Stromness is about 30 minutes by car or cab from the airport. There is also a direct bus connection.

History
Stromness looks back on a long and eventful history. Originally founded by Vikings, the town developed into an important base for whaling fleets in the 17th century. The town later profited from herring and cod fishing. In the 19th century, Stromness was an important port for the Hudson’s Bay Company and the starting point for British overseas expeditions. The town served as an important naval base during both world wars.
