Skåne Jet sold – Catamaran now Ferries for SeaJets in Greece
Farewell to the island of Rügen
The red catamaran “Skåne Jet” was a real eye-catcher from 2020 to 2024: it operated for the shipping company FRS Baltic on the Sassnitz-Trelleborg route between Sassnitz-Mukran and southern Sweden.
However, the ferry service was surprisingly discontinued in the fall of 2024. FRS cited increased operating costs and a lack of profitability due to low demand in the low season as the reasons.
Sale to the Greek shipping company SeaJets
Now it’s “goodbye, Rügen”. The catamaran has been sold to the Greek shipping company SeaJets, as confirmed by FRS.
The catamaran formerly known as the “Skåne Jet” will sail under the name “Eurochampion Jet 2” in future.
A modern ship with history
The ship was built by Incat in Australia in 1998 and is one of the fastest car ferry catamarans in the world.
In operation for FRS Baltic, the fast ferry completed the Germany-Sweden connection in around 2.5 hours. This made it the fastest sea connection between Germany and Sweden.
Uncertainty about the exact location
SeaJets has not yet officially announced where and on which route the catamaran will be deployed in future. There is speculation in industry circles about the Greek islands, such as Piraeus-Syros-Mykonos-Naxos-Ios-Thira.
Significance for Rügen & Sweden connection
For the port of Sassnitz-Mukran, the discontinuation of the route and the sale of the catamaran means a significant cut in ferry traffic. Currently, only the Ferry to Bornholm(Bornholmslinjen) still sails from the Sassnitz ferry port.
It remains to be seen whether the Germany-South Sweden route will be resumed with another shipping company.
