Scandlines relies on shore power connection for environmentally friendly ferry services
Scandlines, a pioneer in green shipping, has signed a groundbreaking contract with the Norwegian company Norwegian Electric Systems AS (NES). The aim is to implement a shore power connection for the ferry terminal in Puttgarden in order to supply the zero direct emissions ferry “Futura” and the hybrid ferries on the Puttgarden-Rødby route with sustainable electricity.
Sustainable partnership with NES
The maritime system integration company NES, known for its sustainable energy solutions, will not only supply the land-based charging system, but will also ensure the connection to the electricity grid of the regional grid operator, Schleswig-Holstein Netz AG. This partnership builds on the success of an existing contract that covered the delivery of a shore-based power charging system in Rødby in April 2022.

Scandlines reaffirms its clear green agenda and emphasizes its long-standing investments in environmentally friendly technologies for the ferry fleet. The shore power connection in Puttgarden is a further step towards achieving the emissions targets and operating the fleet sustainably.
Innovative charging system for record-fast charging
NES takes responsibility for the energy solution from the power grid to the propeller. The impressive charging solution, which is already being supplied for Scandlines’ zero-emission cargo ferry, features a 30 MVA grid transformer, medium and low-voltage transformers, switchgear and a control and data acquisition system.
Superior battery capacity and short charging time
The “Futura” will be equipped with a battery pack of ten megawatt hours, which corresponds to a total capacity of around 150 electric cars. The record-fast charging time of just 12 minutes during loading and unloading of the cars is made possible by the innovative charging system. Jan Klokk from NES emphasizes the challenges of handling such an amount of energy in a maritime context.
NES uses Norwegian sites for development and testing
The subsidiary of HAV Group ASA, NES, plans to develop, assemble and test the onshore energy system at its Norwegian sites in Bergen, Egersund and Ålesund.
Scandlines and NES are thus taking a further step towards an environmentally friendly and sustainable future for shipping.
