Finnlines takes delivery of Finncanopus Superstar ferry
Finnlines took delivery of the Finncanopus, the second ship in the Superstar class for freight and passengers (Ro-Pax), in China on December 12, 2023. The handover ceremony took place at the China Merchants Jinling shipyard in Weihai. The ship will serve the route between Finland and Sweden(Naantali-Långnäs-Kapellskär) and is expected to enter service in February 2024.
Focus on sustainability: part of the EUR 500 million Green Newbuilding program
The Finncanopus cargo and passenger ferry is part of Finnlines’ EUR 500 million Green Newbuilding Program, which has now been completed. This program includes two hybrid ro-pax and three hybrid ro-ro ships, all equipped with the latest environmentally friendly technology. The first Superstar ro-pax ferry, the Finnsirius, was delivered in July and entered service on the Naantali-Långnäs-Kapellskär route in September 2023. Finncanopus will join this route in February 2024.
Sustainability as an investment in the future
Tom Pippingsköld, President and CEO of Finnlines, emphasized at the ceremony at the Weihai shipyard: “Finnlines has made significant investments in sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies in order to position itself competitively. Our Green Newbuilding Investment Program, which began in 2018, is now complete and demonstrates our unwavering commitment to the environment, our customers and other stakeholders.”
The largest Ro-Pax ships in the fleet
The two sister ships are the largest ro-pax vessels in the Finnlines fleet, with 5,200 lanes for freight and certification for 1,100 passengers. Juha Ahia, head of the Newbuilding team at Finnlines, said: “With these Superstar vessels, we are continuing our transition to the hybrid era to offer more efficient and sustainable maritime transportation services.”
Improving services for passengers and freight
Antonio Raimo, Line Manager at Finnlines, emphasized the importance of the new Superstar ships for the market: “Finnlines is the market leader on this route, and our new Superstar ships set a completely new standard for ro-pax transport in the Baltic Sea, both for freight and passengers.”
