CHINA ZORRILLA: The largest battery-powered Ferry in the world
Milestone for maritime electromobility
On May 2, 2025, a new chapter in the history of shipping was opened in Hobart, Tasmania: the CHINA ZORRILLA, the world’s largest all-electric ship, was launched. Built by the Australian shipyard Incat for the South American ferry operator Buquebus, the ship marks a major step towards sustainable shipping.
Top technical performance
With a length of 130 meters and a width of 32 meters, the CHINA ZORRILLA is not only the largest electric ship, but also the largest electric vehicle ever built. It can transport up to 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles. It is powered by an energy storage system (ESS) with a capacity of over 40 megawatt hours, which is fed by more than 250 tons of batteries. This energy supplies eight electric water jet propulsion systems, which were developed in collaboration with the Finnish technology company Wärtsilä.
From LNG to 100 percent electric
The original plan was to run the ship on liquefied natural gas (LNG). However, following discussions between Incat and Buquebus, it was decided to switch completely to electric propulsion. “The next ship I deliver to you will be 100% electric,” promised Incat founder Robert Clifford to Buquebus President Juan Carlos López Mena. The decision was made and the CHINA ZORRILLA became a reality.
Luxury on board
In addition to impressive technology, the CHINA ZORRILLA also offers comfort: there is a 2,300 square meter duty-free store on board, the largest of its kind in the world at Ferry. The interior fit-out will be completed in the coming months before the ship sets sail.
A step towards a more environmentally friendly future
The CHINA ZORRILLA will operate on the route between Buenos Aires and Colonia del Sacramento (between Argentina and Uruguay). This route is known for its high volume of passengers, especially tourists and commuters. The use of the all-electric ship can save up to 37,545 tons of CO₂ annually, which represents a significant contribution to reducing emissions in the maritime sector.
Tasmania’s contribution to global shipping
The completion of the CHINA ZORRILLA is not only a triumph for Incat, but also a significant export success for Tasmania. With a value of around 250 million US dollars, the ship is one of the most important exports in the history of the Australian state. Premier Jeremy Rockliff praised the project as a “historic moment” for the region.
Conclusion
The CHINA ZORRILLA sets new standards in maritime electromobility. With its impressive capacity, innovative technology and focus on sustainability, it shows that environmentally friendly shipping is possible on a large scale. A true role model for the future of shipping.
